Whippet Collar

Greyhounds, Whippets, Lurchers?
When ever I see them they have a wide leather collar, not like other dog collars that are one width all the way around. Why are they different and why do they have them?
This type of collar:

Thanks!
I have a whippet, they are lovely dogs.
Whippets have very long slender necks. The collars have a wide bit so that when you pull on the collar you do not hurt the dogs neck. Whippets have very fine skin and fur on their necks which can easily be rubbed away by coarse collars so leather collars work better and are more comfortable. Since whippets are very streamlined for running a normal collar would slip over their ears and head. The thicker collars stay on a little better.
